In France, tobacco use among women on the rise
Tobacco use among men is declining. But tobacco use among women is increasing. According to a large report published by Santé Publique France, women who smoke are on the rise. This report was also heavily reported by the press, including the website Pourquoi Docteur.
In 1974, 59% of the men and 28% of the women where daily or occasional smokers.
In 2014, the rate fell to 39% for men while it went up to 30% for women.

We need to act to reduce tobacco use among women

The Health Ministry as well as tobacco control organizations are mobilized to minimize the tobacco use among women. Indeed, tobacco leads to premature deaths, namely due to larynx, trachea, bronchus and lung cancers. This means that when those cancer-related deaths decreased by 15% among men, they went up by 39% among women between 2002 and 2013.
