USA: A new summary of 800 e-cig studies reveals its findings

The cost benefit analysis of e-cigarettes remains uncertain for some. Consequently, the American government has decided to take a closer look at numerous scientific studies focused on the safety of e-cigarettes.

A few days ago, the US Academy of Sciences published a report entitled, “Public Health Consequences of the E-cigarette.” In total, more than 600 pages of the report are dedicated to vaping.

The US regulatory agency asked the government to find a concrete solution for regulating the use and sale of e-cigarettes. The hope is to be able to evaluate real-time risks. Dozens of researchers were recruited to analyse over 800 scientific studies on the subject. The American Academy of Sciences summarized the findings, the most comprehensive summary of e-cigarette studies to date.

The primary goal of this analysis is to determine whether or not e-cigarettes are harmful to health, or, on the other hand, if they are a technological miracle that can safely and effectively help people quit smoking.

Mixed Results

However, it should be specified that these threats are minimal. It can also be applied to smartphones, since the risks are primarily due to the battery.

Of course, e-cigarettes also have numerous benefits. First, their toxicity is far lower than tobacco. The report states that replacing cigarettes with e-cigarettes greatly limits the ingestion of toxic and carcinogenic chemicals. Although e-cigarettes do lead to premature aging of the skin, the impact is laughably small compared to tobacco.

In addition, it is possible that quitting smoking in favour of vaping reduces the negative effects that tobacco has on certain organs. Asthmatics, for example, have noticed a reduction in breathing problems. A further reassuring conclusion: passive vaping is much less harmful—and almost non-existent—compared to second-hand smoke.

In terms of helping smokers quit, it has already been proven that e-cigarette addiction is less likely and much less dangerous than tobacco. Finally, it has even been noted that regularly using an electronic cigarette increases the likelihood of permanently quitting tobacco.
