Nicotine isn’t more dangerous than caffeine

Nicotine isn’t more dangerous than caffeine

NicotineWhat is the real health danger of nicotine? The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) is hoping to get to the bottom of this question. In a recent study, the British organization found that 90% of participants believe cigarettes to be harmful to health. In reality, however, nicotine is not any more dangerous than caffeine.

The RSPH’s main goal is to provide the general public with more comprehensive information about nicotine. Specifically, the organization hopes to show that nicotine is not in itself a harmful chemical compound. Rather, it is the inhalation of nicotine combined with smoke and other carcinogenic elements, like tar, that lead to health concerns.

Each year in the United States, 500,000 people die from tobacco-related illnesses. The nicotine contained in cigarettes is a highly addictive product. However, it can be consumed without risk through the use of safer substitutes. Indeed, the RSPH believes that the e-cigarette is the best option for smokers hoping to quit tobacco.

Changing public opinion about nicotine

For Shirley Cramer, the organization’s general director, the public must differentiate between the effects of cigarettes and the effects of nicotine on general health. Nicotine substitutes like the electronic cigarette do not present any health risks. Furthermore, nicotine dependence is comparable to caffeine dependence.

In addition, the Royal Society for Public Health has highlighted the medical benefits of nicotine. Studies are currently being done to demonstrate its use as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease. There have also been promising results in the fight against Alzeimer’s.

From a chemical point of view, nicotine has the same effects as a stimulant. It increases focus and helps people concentrate at work. Recent studies have further proven that nicotine could be used to treat attention deficit disorders amongst young people.
