FDA announcements: the impacts on the vaping world

We have talked in a recent article about the FDA announcements (Food & Drugs Administration). Indeed, the FDA has announced last week a certain number of changes in their fight against tobacco, especially concerning the marketing authorization of vaping products and the nicotine content allowed in tobacco products.

For the American Vaping Association, the annoucements can be summarized in 5 main points:

  • Delay of Pre-Market Tobacco Application (PMTA) deadline. This means that manufacturers of vaping products now have until August 8, 2023 to submit their product marketing authorization.
  • Definition of product standards. The FDA plans to issue product standards for vapor products « to protect against known public health risks. »
  • Process clarity: the FDA will issue new « foundational rules » to modify the product review process.
  • Flavors: the FDA will study the effects of flavors, both on young people and adult smokers looking for a less harmful alternative.
  • Reduced-nicotine cigarettes: the FDA will begin a public dialogue on the impact of reducing nicotine in cigarettes to non-addictive levels.

The vaping world is relieved after those FDA announcements

Gregory Conley relieved about recent FDA announcementsThe president of the American Vaping Association, Gregory Conley said he felt « relieved by the announcements ». With the nomination of Scott Gottlieb, the American agency has taken a first step in favor of vaping.

« Without Dr. Gottlieb’s leadership, over 99% of vapor products on the market today would have been banned in fifteen months’ time », he then explained.
