A new study has made it formal: vaping isn’t bad for health

Professor Riccardo Polosa is a doctor who specializes in e-cigarette risks. The results of his latest research have just been published in Nature, an internationally renowned journal. His study is unique because of the test subjects: for almost four years, he followed regular e-cigarette users who have never smoked tobacco.

The main difficulty of the study was finding enough people to establish a representative panel of participants. E-cigarette retail stores also helped participate in the study, and managers were in charge of learning the patterns of customer consumption.

The probability of an individual having vaped without ever having smoked a cigarette is small. Indeed, in the end only 9 people responded to the research criteria. The average age of the candidates was 29 years old. The hospital staff where the research was conducted selected the participants for the study.

A landmark study validated by scientists

The limited number of participants was a challenge for obtaining reliable statistics. However, the study’s protocol was validated by the Ethics Review Committee of the University of Catan. The results clearly show that the participants did not experience any physical changes as a result of vaping.

Dr. Polosa’s team analysed multiple physical constants that are often affected by smoking tobacco. In addition, for three and a half years the volunteers underwent various types of medical exams; the collected data unambiguously shows that there was no sign of pulmonary lesions or damage. What’s more, the level of carbon monoxide and nitric oxide in exhaled air did not increase during the research period.

The results demonstrated that vaping had no negative effect on the respiratory capacities of the nine participants.

And the study went even further. None of the participants switched from e-cigarettes to cigarettes, and two participants even stopped vaping altogether. This proves that vaping does not inevitably lead to smoking tobacco.
